Neva Masquerade kittens

This is the story of our two Neva Masquerade Siberian kittens born in 2014. Sometimes we need to help when nature fails. The kittens are now grown up but they continue to mature through the first five years of life.

Our first born is a red point male who started as a weakling and was overpowered at the dinner table by our second. As a result he had to be fed KMR milk substitute with a French 5 catheter for a week or so and then he took off with gusto using a kitten feeding bottle.

Our second born is a young lady who arrived with the air of a Roman warrior. She was in command from the start and would not let anything like even one other kitten approach her dinner table. She backed off once her eyes were open and realized that there was room for others. However, mom was not lactating very well so I kept her brother on the bottle. Mom slowly turned up production and our boy discovered that the real thing was far better than the "store bought" substitute. How true!

The kittens began to eat soft moist food at about three weeks.

Soon after they start on the solid food I introduce the litter pan. Now that's tricky because I don't want their mom to be using it, too so we begin with a 5 x 7 inch photo film or print processing tray. Just right for the kittens but too small for mom. They learn to use it on their own because once they discover they can scratch in the litter, it stimulates then to use it. Hooray! So much easier than with puppies . . .

Both kittens in the above pictures have reached about the maximum color in their points. The color develops in the areas of the skin that are cooler than the rest of the body. They are born totally white since in the womb they are body temperature all over. The color begins to show at about three weeks. Their weight as of 16 September 2014 are shown below hust in case you are curious.

Milan weighs (M) 2760 grams or 6 pounds, 1 ounce
Milena weighs (F) 2240 grams or 4 pounds, 15 ounces

Here they are at about three weeks old --
